The dissolution of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) marked a significant shift in the dynamics of Islamic movements in Indonesia, but it did not produce uniform ideological responses among its former members. This study aims to analyzeand classify former JI members’ responses to the dissolution and explain the negotiation of collective identity and the rationales underlying these responses. The study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzedusing the Miles and Huberman interactive model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings identify three categories of responses: pragmatic, adaptive, and ideological. The pragmatic group accepts the dissolution by considering its social, economic, and security benefits. The adaptive group accepts the dissolution as a strategy for adjusting to changing circumstances while retaining some previous ideological beliefs and religious networks. In contrast, the ideological group rejects the dissolution and maintains its former identity and beliefs based on spiritual and ideological commitments. These findings demonstrate that post-dissolution ideological transformation is gradual, diverse, and nonlinear. Social Identity Theory explains the negotiation between former collective identity and national identity, while Rational Choice Theory elucidates how benefits, risks, and values shape individual decisions. This study argues that organizational dissolution represents the starting point of transformation rather than a guarantee of comprehensive ideological change.
