Abstract

Human development is commonly assessed through material and social indicators, while the Islamic perspective also considers the protection of essential human interests. This study analyzes human development in South Sulawesi Province using the Islamic Human Development Index (I-HDI) based on Maqashid Syariah. It applies a descriptive quantitative approach to secondary data for 24 regencies and cities over 2021–2025, drawing on indicators associated with the protection of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth. The manuscript reports that the average I-HDI increased from 66.80 in 2021 to 77.89 in 2025. Makassar recorded the highest reported five-year average (91.15), while Jeneponto recorded the lowest (55.04). These results indicate an overall upward trend alongside substantial differences among local governments. However, the completeness of the underlying district-level dataset, the operational formulas, and the classification thresholds require author verification before the index values can be independently reproduced. The findings may provide an additional perspective for regional human-development assessment, provided that the indicator construction and data sources are fully documented
